Voting in local elections is no longer compulsory in Flanders, but it’s essential in a democracy. It’s also the best way to ensure that our commune is well managed on a day-to-day basis.
If you can’t go to the polling station in person, you can always give a proxy, subject to certain conditions.
Who can I give my proxy to?
To another Rhode elector to whom you will have to hand over certain documents.
Please note: A voter can only receive one proxy.
When can I give a proxy and what documents do I need?
Here are the 3 most common cases:
- You cannot vote yourself for health reasons:
- Complete the A95 power of attorney form, which must be signed by both you and your proxy;
- Attach a certificate from your treating physician ;
- Give these documents + your paper invitation to your proxy.
- You are abroad for professional or study reasons:
- Complete the A95 power of attorney form, which must be signed by both you and your proxy;
- Attach a certificate from your employer or the school management ;
- Give these documents + your paper invitation to your proxy.
- You are abroad for other reasons (vacation, leisure):
- Complete the A95 power of attorney form, which must be signed by both you and your proxy;
- Complete form A96 and attach proof of your stay abroad (plane ticket, hotel reservation, etc.). Please note: a declaration on your honor is no longer sufficient.
- This A96 form must be signed by the Mayor or one of his representatives;
- Give all these documents + your paper invitation to your proxy.
Armed with these documents and your own invitation, the person who has received a proxy from you must go to YOUR polling station.
